The Dogon Tribe is from the West African Republic of Mali. This Antelope Dogon mask is used in memorial and funeral ceremonies called Dama which commemorates the origin of death. These are large ceremonies with hundreds of participants and help the spirit move into an Ancestral place. These masks often represent animals that inhabit particular regions where the Dogon live and hunt. Monkeys, antelope and hares are a few examples.
This particular piece is believed to be between 70 and 80 years old.
Small cracks, discoloration, etc are a normal part of the ageing process and add to the character of each item.
